Attempt to Blame Organic Crop for E coli Outbreak Fails

Agribusiness has delivered us a new disease, E. coli, and now attempts to place the blame on the innocent: organic farming.

The attempt to blame an organic farm for the fatal E. coli outbreak in Europe appears to be failing. Tests have come back from the lab showing no sign of the deadly disease.

Of course, German officials are saying that, even if all the tests come back negative, the farm could still be the culprit. Clearly, they do not intend to let this go. It's reminiscent of so many of the FDA's claims against raw milk producers in the US. The tests rarely prove that the milk was contaminated—but once the farm has been destroyed by the bad publicity or forced out of business by the government using the false claim, then the subject is quietly dropped. The test results are never announced.

Will this be the fate of Klaus Verbeck's farm? We can hope not—but the fact is that the media campaign against his produce is still heating up.

Klaus Verbeck has been dumbfounded by the accusations. He says that there are no animals or animal products on his site. So, how could his farm be culpable? It's interesting to note that German officials have not stated what led them to his farm.

In the meantime, the news media is claiming that raw food is dangerous, and that raw bean sprouts are particularly fearful.

What's never mentioned is the real cause of this, and every other, E. coli outbreak: Agribusiness. It's the original cause of the disease, which didn't exist before 1983. If raw food—the most nutritious form of food—is now dangerous because of the potential of E. coli, then the entire industry should be ended.

That would, of course, resolve nearly the entire problem. When we're aware of the source of our food, the risks plummet. Any outbreak can be identified, located, and ended rapidly. Ultimately the lesson that should be learned is that we have engaged on a devastatingly dangerous means of obtaining food. The only solution is to end Agribusiness as we know it.
